4 Scientific Methods To Be More Creative
Is there really a way a scientific way that we can become more creative hey guys what’s going on it’s me will patterson and welcome back to a new video today i’m going to be showing you four scientific ways to be more creative i know it sounds really strange how could you ever become More creative it just you’re born with it right well i used to think this too if you’re someone sat here watching this video and you just genuinely believe you don’t have the creative gene then you are 100 wrong the creative gene does not exist everyone on earth can be creative and we know This through time and time again in history when people have gone through certain situations they’ve had to get out of or do something different in then they’ve thought of ways out of that situation this video is brought to you by skillshare over the past eight years i’ve been working with Brands designing logos i’ve been doing hand lettering i’ve traveled to certain parts of the world showing my work doing workshops and one thing that i know for sure from the experience of someone who doesn’t think they’re creative to becoming someone whose job it is to be creative Is that if i can do it then you can do it too so before i get into exactly how scientists believe that we could become more creative we need to understand what creativity actually is creativity is not a thing that you’re born with naturally you may think this because kids Generally create different things at different times and they may be good at drawing or may not be we start to then compare ourselves into thinking that we’re not as creative as our friend who can draw sculpt or paint what we do know is that creativity is more like a muscle It is something that is flexed used and when you practice kind of like going to the gym when you practice creativity the more creative you get the bigger the creative muscles you have if you don’t go to the gym and practice lifting weights then you’re never going To be able to lift the weight of someone else or lift the weight that that person is lifting that you’re seeing same goes with creativity if you don’t practice creativity through drawing exercises painting designing music creation if you don’t practice these things you won’t feel as creative and you won’t unlock Those creative juices so if you’re someone who thinks you’re not creative well today is the day that you’re going to find out that you are creative so the first way scientists believe that you can become more creative is changing what you listen to there was a study done where they got a Group of people to listen to music and another group of people to listen to white noise static and create something i don’t know exactly what they were asked to create they found that the group who were listening to white noise just static noise were more creative than the group who were listening to Music and that is because the music that they were listening to was most likely distracting them so it was stopping the flow of creativity if you’re a designer in here and you’ve been a designer for any amount of time and you’ve worked on a project you know you get to a certain level Where you get flow and that is where you don’t have to even think about what you’re doing it’s just sort of flowing out of you now the reason why i think static and white noise were making people more creative in a certain task is because they were listening to something different So they were actually blocking out on the outside what was there now if you’re listening to the most head-banging music which i do often whilst you’re doing a creative task that can distract you so what i would suggest to do is to listen to something that you’ve never listened to before something Relaxing something that doesn’t take the forefront of your mind to understand so don’t be listening to like tosinabasi and his amazing guitar skills because you’re just going to be distracted try listening to white noise or ambient nature music i do that all the time we even have an App for that called mindscape if you want to go check that it’ll be in the link in the description it is completely free the second scientific backed way of being more creative is free designing i say free designing but this could be free music creation so just Jamming out free writing where you just write anything or free sketching or free painting when we are paid to be creative or when we feel the pressure to be creative that can stifle our creativity because there is a pressure there now to take the pressure off really does enhance creativity and what Scientists found is that people who were just drawing people who were just creating for the sake of it like when they were literally didn’t know what to write for an article they were just writing random stuff down not even looking at the monitor they were just focused on just getting anything on paper They found that this was a great way of generating very good ideas so this is a great way of generating very good ideas whether you’re a designer freelance writer a painter someone who does anything creative instead of sitting down expecting something cool to come out of your brain If you don’t feel creative and you don’t feel the juice is moving or you just want to take part in a cool exercise just start writing just start drawing and designing i do this all the time on my ipad or my computer i’ll just pull up a shape and see what i Can create the number one rule with this is to not judge what you’re doing if you start to judge what you’re doing and hate it and start again then you’re going to fail miserably because you’re getting your self-esteem lowered you want to boost that self-esteem by knowing that this exercise and that’s All it is as an exercise is giving you ideas it’s generating ideas that weren’t so apparent before the next one is looking at a certain color now we all know that colors influence our atmosphere so it influences our vibes in certain rooms like right now it’s very much dark mode in my office Everything is dark behind me and i am sort of in white everything influences from red which means you know power it means stop green which means go it means nature it means open blue means like see quiet tranquility yellow which means passion it can make you feel electric and energized All these colors have a psychological imprint in our brains from what we’re told by society and branding from when we were younger marketing is huge with this well what scientists wanted to do was test whether colors had an influence over how creative you could be so they had two groups one Group was going to look at the color red and then start a creative task and then the second group was going to look briefly at the color green just very briefly then start the same creative task what scientists found was the group that was looking at the color green Even just briefly were far more creative than those who were looking at the color red we don’t know why this happens but it’s good to know and a little linking with this i’ve talked about it before but plants anything that’s green and alive it’s life it’s a time it’s alive anything that’s Alive that you can put on your desk is going to change your mood and productivity there’s even a ted talk that talks about how having a personal plant in the office can increase creativity and productivity at the same time
