Theme Design Competition

Hey guys, we’ve got a really exciting video for you today that I’ve been waiting for a while to do. It’s all about theme design! I’ve partnered with Huawei to do a video on the global theme design competition with a prize pool of $300,000, with the top prize being $20,000 for the chosen winner.

What Is a Theme Design?

If you don’t know, a theme is basically all the assets – the wallpaper, the icons inside of a Huawei smartphone, and Huawei watch. The competition is to design the best theme with work that you’ve already got or something that you want to design from scratch.

Getting Started in the Competition

Huawei asked me to give you guys the opportunity to start creating and to submit it not only to the competition but to Instagram as well to be featured in my video. So, in today’s video, I’m going to be looking at all the work that was featured on Instagram under the hashtag #willpatsubmit.

Competition Deadline

Don’t worry if you want to be part of the theme design competition — you still can! Entries close on the first of July, so you’ve still got time to put in your submissions to the official competition.

Your Theme Design

This is my work. I did this painting about two years ago, and it was really fun to create. I just literally splashed a load of paint down and it makes a really cool wallpaper or a theme. The only thing that I would suggest with my one here is that I would have to go and edit it to look perfect for the competition.

Reviewing Community Submissions

Let’s look at some of the submissions that we’ve gotten from the community on Instagram.

Tin Company Entry

I like this design. It’s very abstract and cool. The only thing I would suggest is to have a mock-up that shows the design on a phone, which is really important.

Orb Wallpaper by SuiteMortal

The orb look is neat, and the red color is really sweet. It would be great to see the phone mock-up at the beginning of the Instagram carousel.

Abstract Liquid Bubble Wallpaper by Mr. Designer

I really like the bubbles and gradients in this design. It would be interesting to see these themes with icons as well.

Mr. Designer has submitted quite a few designs, all with different color palettes. They all look really good, but adding more elements like the homepage on the design would be a great addition.
