Getting Started in SEO

Hey Daryl, how’s it going?

Hey man, thanks for having me. We were just talking about those awkward intros on the interviews.

Yeah, it’s funny how like you’re just chatting away like “oh everyone’s so cool,” you hit record and it’s like “hey, how are you?” It immediately just adds a barrier to it.

Can you imagine if I just started hitting record and then my accent and everything just started changing instantly?

You should do that, that’d be pretty good. I think you’d probably be just a perfect intro that’s very different to every show.

Maybe next time I’ll just record like a YouTube video and it’ll be me with an American accent. Did my accent screw up, right?

Starting an SEO Agency

How did you first get into SEO? You’re running your own agency now, right?

Yeah, so I started kind of the same way. I’ve been doing marketing stuff since I was like 15 years old or something, just little things tinkering, trying to make some money and stuff like that. I had marketed pretty well affiliate marketing stuff before that. How I got into SEO was, long story short, I made a bunch of money affiliate marketing, lost all that money through some nefarious deals, started up again, was trying to make money by selling local stuff to local businesses. One of those guys asked for SEO. I didn’t particularly know what SEO was at the time to be honest. I signed this guy up, it was 500 a month in 2013, and I bought a course the next day on how to do SEO, from Rob Ratched and Gwen Alsop. And that’s where it went.

You’re just like, ‘Alright, I’ll figure it out myself.’ I mean, I had a background in that stuff anyway, kind of marketing stuff and technical sorts of things, so I figured I could figure it out. I probably got quite lucky because back in 2013 you could rank significantly faster than you can today.

Scaling and Managing an Agency

So you run a Shopify agency now, right? You’re focused on scaling it, growing it, client acquisition, that sort of thing?

Yeah, my job these days is business development, getting clients in the door, overall management stuff. I have a team in place to do a lot of the work, so I strategize our overall processes and specific clients. Probably 90% is bringing new clients, doing the sales, and stuff like that is still on me at this point.

Are you planning to outsource it?

Definitely, but probably not for a while. I’m pretty capable of doing it at this point. It’s not that many calls because I’m also picky. If someone books a call, I’ll ask them what their budget is or I’ll look at the size of that, and I’ll probably just cancel half the calls that come in. If they book on my calendar, I’ll send them back a message saying they’re not the best fit for us right now and I’ll cancel half of the calls. I’m still very hands-on in that aspect.
