A Graphic Designer’s Review Of Procreate 5X On iPad Pro
Procreate 5 is officially out and I’ve had it in my hands for about two weeks now. I’m Will Patterson, a handwritten artist and designer, specializing in brand design, logo type design, and hand lettering. I’ve been using Procreate ever since the first iPad Pro and have seen it evolve with the introduction of the Apple Pencil. Today, I’m going to give you a designer’s review of Procreate 5.
New Pencil Filters
Pencil filters are a significant new feature in Procreate 5. They work like normal filters and masks, but instead of using a mask, you can draw in where you want the effect to be. This provides a high level of control without having to deal with complex layer systems.
Gradient Updates
Procreate 5 introduces new gradient updates, allowing you to create gradients on a layer or a specific part of your artwork. The ability to pencil in the gradients and customize the colors and positions provides a new level of flexibility and creativity.
Non-Destructible Editing
As a designer who values non-destructible editing, I would like to see these effects be layers to allow for easier undo and redo options. Despite this, the new half-tone filter and gradient maps are particularly impressive and offer new creative possibilities.
Procreate On The Face
The new ‘face painting’ feature in Procreate 5 is a fun addition, allowing users to paint or design on their face. While not particularly useful for professional design work, it’s a unique and enjoyable feature, especially for kids and face tattoo design enthusiasts.
Reference Companion
Procreate 5 introduces a reference companion, allowing users to have an image inside of Procreate on a movable widget. This is particularly useful for referencing images while working on artwork, providing a convenient and efficient way to incorporate reference materials.
Swatch Drop
The new swatch drop feature in Procreate 5 allows users to select a swatch and drag it to fill the canvas with the chosen color. This intuitive update simplifies the process of applying colors to the canvas, enhancing the overall user experience.
In conclusion, Procreate 5 offers a range of new features and updates that cater to the needs of graphic designers and artists. The introduction of pencil filters, gradient updates, and other innovative features provides a new level of control and creativity for users. While there are areas for potential improvement, such as non-destructible editing and additional functionality for the reference companion, Procreate 5 sets a high standard for digital drawing and design apps on the iPad Pro.
Overall, Procreate 5 is undeniably a significant leap forward, showcasing the dedication of the Savage team to listen, innovate, and exceed expectations in the digital art and design space.
