How To Create Beautiful Hand Lettering Compositions!
Hey guys what’s going on it’s me will patterson welcome back to a new video today i’m going to be showing you how to easily compose your hand lettering there are a few different ways of doing so we’re going to be doing it inside of procreate on the ipod pro 12.9 inch the big one and i’m going to be showing you the easiest ways to compose them this video is brought to you by paperlike before i get into more of the video i just want to explain why you’re not seeing any reflections and why you might hear A cool sound whilst i’m drawing on here paperlike is a matte screen protector with nanodot technology it makes the actual screen feel like paper when you’re designing or drawing i’ve used paperlike in all of my ipads ever since i’ve had one since for like four years honestly it’s A world of difference if you’d like to try paperlike and to get one for yourself go ahead and click the link down below in the description okay so right here we’ve got a piece of a hand lettering and i just want to walk you through so when you see hand lettering like this You might be like oh how does he get it so it flourishes and how does it fit together well the real reason or the real way is because of a hierarchy layout system which is just like a grid-based system if you take a look at this this is basically A grid layout there’s nothing going on with it all i did was created a square around and made some lettering inside of it made it kind of symmetrical so when we look down like this it’s quite symmetrical side to side and it’s balanced it just fits highlighting is all about symmetry and Composing hand lettering is quite fun i would suggest you guys take part in doing so so the first thing i do when i want to compose lettering is obviously i get my procreate canvas out i go ahead and get a drawing guide here and i’m just going to edit this drawing Guide ever so slightly i’m going to put the grid size down a little bit it’s great working with grids it just makes it a lot easier the next thing we want to work out is the framing of our lettering so the frame that we’re going to use today is just a square We’re going to use these grid lines i’m going to create some straight lines like so we’re going to try and create just a normal square the microphone’s kind of in the way for me just like a normal instagram i could have done this a lot neater and easier So we’ve got a little square there i’m going to go ahead and just transform this up a little bit just going uniform transform it up so now we know what the frame is so this is the usage this could be a poster it could be a hand lettering Piece it could be anything what we’re going to do is create a new layer over the top now we want to go ahead and map out our quote or what we want into letter i want to be better okay so this is a really good exercise when you’re wanting to lay out something Just write it down straight on top and we’re going to start putting blocks in now what these blocks do is it allows you to visually see how much that word is going to take space in the composition so i’m just going to do this you can see there’s two big words in There followed by three smaller ones so we’ve got one better b and two so we know that want is going to be a big word so we’re going to highlight that one and we want the better which is the sort of crescendo of the hand lettering piece That’s going to be a big word too so we’ve got to make sure we get that so we can use these blocks and create multiple different variations of one lettered piece which is something that i would suggest you all do we could start off with the most simplistic one by going like this So i want can be up here 2b can go here and you can see the blocks i’m putting here fit what these are going to be so i want to be in fact remove the b over here and then better can simply just be a longer one Down here that can be script that’s very basic very basic just hierarchical hand lettering and i would suggest that you go a bit further in this but it’s great practice to just start doing this go ahead and duplicate that frame and we’re going to bring this down make Sure you’ve got magnetics on it as well it just helps keep everything in order and we’re going to do the same thing again but we’re going to try it with different grid lines and this is the reason why we’re doing this we want to just focus on the shapes we’re not worried About where the letters are placed really so we can go i so we can do that as a script i that could be there we can have like some things there like you see in the last one we can have this sort of line going up here And then we can have want to be with some lines here and then to fill out this space down here i’ve got to try and make this a bit better but you can show the rough guidelines here better now you’ve instantly got two ideas that you can Work with there and then from here you can actually start going ahead and flourishing the idea too so we can actually bring the want up like so better can have this we can come up here we can create like a nice little flourish all we’re doing is getting the idea We’re not really bothered about anything else this is a great way of just working out where it should be placed then we just move to do the same thing we just copy the thing then we’re just going to do some simple ones as well create a new layer create some straight Lines and when you’re composing stuff like this if you’re going to use brush lettering just use a normal brush i’ve got these brushes available on my website now that we’ve got a few different ideas of what we can actually do with this you can either send this like To the client as is which i wouldn’t suggest to do if you have a client for this project but you can keep going with it and it’s all about finalizing it and not having any pressure when finalizing it so what i would generally do is if i Like of this concept for instance which i’m going to use this one just to make it a bit easier i’m going to just merge these down together and then i’m going to go ahead i’m going to make this a lot bigger so i can work with it We’re going to change the opacity just like you would do a tracing paper you don’t have to do this on the ipad and then we’ll just carry on refining it and i’m going to show you what i would normally do to refine something like this i would just go ahead with my brush Again if we wanted to start this with the brush and this time i’m actually trying to make it look good see with this we’ve got empty space over there so i’m just going to create that see if i can flourish with the w no it doesn’t look good And then i’m going to focus on the better part at the bottom as well keeping all the letters…
