A lot of designers tend to think that creating a font is a long and tedious process and a lot of the time they are correct well in this video I’m going to be showing you how you can design your own typeface using vector data and fonts Of other apps it is matter how skilled you are or how much experience you have although it will help you can create your own font pretty easily inside of an app called vector nater download vaccinated for completely free with the link in the description below

Step 1: Draw Your Typeface

So the first thing you want to do is basically draw your typeface you can see here I’ve got my hand lettering here that I’ve made into a lowercase sort of font what you can do then is you can actually put them together and create cool little looks as to what words you Would like to test it with the way that I test it out this font as you can see or created even is with a brush pen inside of procreate and then as I show you the time lapse I go ahead and I basically draw over it and create a more Full look as a typeface font creation is fun and you can do it in whatever way but having this where you’re constantly refining it it’s just an easy a less stress process so once you’ve got this what you want to do is save it so save This image to your iPad with then you’re going to go inside a vector mater again

Step 2: Import Image into Vector Nater

From here I’m going to basically just go to my pictures but add this up here then I’m gonna go here and drag this right the way inside of my work Like so you don’t have to zoom out it’s because we’re gonna have to bring this down quite a bit so we’re gonna do this hold that little bit down to constrain the angle and we’re gonna keep doing this bring it back in hold it down to constrain we’ve got our layer that you Can resize this to whatever today we’re only going to be working on the lower case because this is can be a bit difficult but everything that I do and there’s basically you could do with any sort of letter in the alphabet uppercase lowercase or glyph so we’ve got our Layer there go quickly to the layer panel over here and we’re going to just decrease the layer opacity to something like as a 16 or something and they just go ahead and lock it when you lock the layer it means you can’t play around with it anymore that’s just locked and That’s sort of like our reference layer create a new layer by pressing this button open and we’re gonna go to our pencil and go to the format section and we’re gonna make sure we only have the stroke on and I want a thin stroke as well so I’ve Gone for the 50 or the 0.5 oh now we’re gonna start off with the a front creation seems really daunting at first but actually it’s pretty simple especially inside of that donator where it allows us to create things quickly and we’re gonna go ahead to my circle Tool which is just here we’re gonna create a circle making sure I’m on my new layer over here and this circle I’m going to just rotate a match to the outside of the shape the next thing I want to do is copy this because there’s no point of me using the pencil here We’ve got a perfect circle the only time you would want to use the pen tool when creating OHS and circles is if you want to look completely different or to have a bit more of a natural imperfect look so go ahead and press this copy button Up here then paste and we’re just going to scale this down like so I’m just gonna roughly do it there’s no point in trying to do it super precise because we can always edit it and change it and there we go we’ve got the first part of Our shape here and I know it’s outlined I don’t know it’s just two circles but we can fix that later so that circle there is actually blocked out of the actual shape now the main thing when it comes to creating a typeface or a font is consistency you can see throughout This whole typeface here that each letter form in its transparent state here you can see that it’s all very consistent the O’s look the same the actual angles are relatively the same there’s a few mistakes but we can fix that later but not only that every thickness everything is relatively Similar and this is consistency so it doesn’t really matter how bad you think you are creating font making sure that the thick parts are thick together so that all consistently thick and the thin cards are all consistently thin and they’re all in the same angle and they All have the same size and the descenders are all the same you’re going to create a good fun so over here we’re going to do this part here of the a and we need to create this eye now what I could do is draw the whole shape and Merge it together but I don’t want to I’m going to steal certain parts of this a later so we’ll use my pen tool then I’m simply going to use something called the box method I start up at the top where the point is and then I’m Going to find where the line if I was to draw a line in the center here I’m gonna find out where that line would hit against the edge of this eye and that will be around about here and what I can do in vector major is put two fingers Down and that will constrain it to up and down now the trick to this is to try and always keep your lines constrained now for the bottom one down here we need to put a line here and the reason why I know this is every time I put a point Down it’s got to be over on the left the right the top on the bottom so now I’m going down here to the bottom I’m gonna go right to the very bottom and I’ve gone I’m gonna pull out my line but I hold two fingers down and this will keep The actual handles horizontal all the way I’m gonna put it to about here and then I’m gonna go up here and it looks slightly strange for a second but don’t freak out it’s all good the reason why I look strange is because we need to pull These handles a bit more but there’s no point in doing it now we can just do it later what we need to do is make sure that we get all the anchor points down where they should be so I know this should be an anchor point here no no there should Be an anchor point here I know there should be an anchor point up here and I know there should be one there and I know that this kind of looks a bit strange but what we can do now is instead of using the selection tool we’re gonna go to something called the Node tool and what this allows you to do is select the anchor points and these anchor points are called nodes in vaccinator and as you can see whenever I select one like so we can drag the handle and it will change the curve now a good tip for anyone who’s creating Tight faces the least amount of anchor points and the least amount of handles gives you a cleaner shape so what we’ve done here is create a really awful looking one
