Failure Is Just A Stepping Stone
So I’m in this weird no man’s land. I’m like walking around with like a 3.85 GPA, 1240 12:30 on my SAT. I’m lazy and writing my essay for the school application, so when I applied to UCLA, UC San Diego, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo one after the other, I was rejected. I got rejected applying to a non-impacted major graphic design. I thought that was going to be my back door. Never did I think I’d become a graphic designer. This is about failure, and I’ve been thinking about this also last night.
Facing Disappointment
I was not a great student in high school. I feel like my older brother had all the brains, all the pressure to do well, and there wasn’t much pressure on me to do well. I never found my motivation. I could tell my parents were super disappointed because they knew I was busy reading comics, playing video games, and spending time with my girlfriend. In Asian culture, especially for first-generation immigrant families, education is everything. I felt ashamed and like I had let my parents down.
Turning Point
I decided to go to a community college, where Asian kids go to repent educational purgatory. My older brother, who had finished school, invited me to live with him. I made promises to focus on school and work on my portfolio. I was determined to improve after being rejected from art schools due to my subpar portfolio.
Struggles Along The Way
Despite my promises, I continued to call my girlfriend, watch TV late at night, and put in minimal effort into my design assignments. My relationship with my brother became strained, leading to tensions at home. I felt like a victim and alone, reaching a breaking point in my personal life.
Realizations And Reinvention
Feeling lost and broken, I reached a dark moment where I contemplated suicide. However, in that moment of despair, I had a revelation. I needed to make a choice to change my path. I decided to reinvent myself and become a better version of who I was. I was determined to take responsibility for my actions and work towards achieving my goals.
Rebirth And Transformation
With a newfound determination, I woke up the next day as a different person. I was full of self-pity, anger, and spite, but I channeled that energy towards reinventing myself. I wanted to climb out of the dark pit I was in and become a new person. I embraced the challenge of becoming someone entirely different from who I used to be.
Embracing Change And Growth
Through self-reflection, determination, and hard work, I was able to overcome my failures and transform myself into the best version of who I could be. I learned to take responsibility for my actions, set goals, and work tirelessly towards achieving them. Failure was no longer a setback but a stepping stone towards personal growth and success. I embraced change and embraced a new mindset that propelled me towards becoming the best version of myself.
