M3 MacBook Pro – Unfortunately not what I was hoping for
So yes from the title of this video I will be returning my M3 MacBook Pro. I want to go into Y and share some very confusing results when testing this machine which has resulted in me wanting to return it. It’s funny because I was so excited to get it that I made a whole new wallpaper pack and everything, a sort of dark themed wallpaper pack just because it’s space black. You guys should definitely check it out.
Apple’s New M3 Chip Line
Apple has launched the all-new M3 line of chips that are going in these machines. They’ve launched three new chips at the same time, the base M3 chip, the M3 Pro, and the M3 Max. They’ve shared a few things on their website comparing things like 3D rendering and video editing speeds. What’s interesting is that they’ve gotten rid of the 13-inch MacBook Pro altogether and replaced it with the 14-in and put the base M3 chip inside it.
Design and Features
The base 14-in model follows the all-new design. It has ridiculously good battery life, the amazing 120 HZ display, and all of the useful ports such as HDMI, SD card, and of course, magc safe. The only issue with the base model is that it comes with 8 GB of unified memory which I don’t think is good enough. I think it’s silly to go with a machine that has 8 GB of unified memory on something like this. I’d understand if you’re looking at like a base model MacBook, but for the 14in MacBook Pro with the M3 chip, 16 GB is a must nowadays. There’s also the all-new space black color which is only available on the MacBook Pro models when you choose the M3 Pro or M3 Max chip. It is definitely one of the best colors Apple has done in a while. It looks absolutely stunning, even though it’s called space black, it’s not actually true black, it’s much more of a very dark gray. This new color reacts to light heavily; it changes color a lot depending on the light source and the surroundings. It also makes the machine almost look a little bit slimmer as it hides the Shadows more. It just looks very sleek. Apple have said that it has a new anodization technique that helps against fingerprints and will do a much better job of not showing scratches.
Performance Disappointment
So when I got this machine, if you’ve seen my unboxing video, I was very excited. I was really looking forward to trying this machine out, unboxing it, using it, and seeing what it can do. I ordered the 14in model with the M3 Pro chip. I much prefer the 14in model over the larger 16in model for personal reasons. I upgraded the M3 Pro chip on this model to the 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU. I also upgraded the unified memory to 36 GB and the SSD to 4 TB. However, when I tried to test the performance of this machine compared to my M1 Max machine, I was in for a surprise. My M3 Pro was so much slower at rendering video compared to my M1 Max machine. At first, I thought it was just a hiccup, but the testing continued to show disappointing results.
Overall, it was not the experience I was hoping for with the M3 MacBook Pro. I will be returning it and looking for other alternatives to meet my performance needs. It’s a shame because the design and features are really good, but ultimately the performance let me down.
